Actress Laila Rouass has joined One Family as an Ambassador for its Refugee Fund, supporting a new Refugee Fund to support innocent victims of the Syrian war.

“The huge number of refugees in the world today is a man-made problem, so we need to do all we can to help people. The inhumane treatment of refugees and negative attitudes towards them is completely unacceptable. They need our love and compassion” said Laila, speaking about the Refugee Fund.

“This is why I am taking my role as Ambassador of One Family’s Refugee Fund very seriously, and together; I am looking to make sure we leave no stone unturned in doing all we can to help refugees, and change attitudes towards them.

” Laila, who has pledged to find time in her busy schedule to visit each of One Family’s Refugee Fund partners, received her big break in the acting world when she was spotted by Italian director Aditya Bhattacharya and whisked to Messina to shoot Senso Unico, an Anglo-Italian film about a Pakistani girl in Italy. She later became a true household name while playing Amber Gates in iconic TV series Footballers’ Wives in the early 2000s. Since then, she has appeared in movies including The Sandstorm, The Four Feathers and Shoot on Sight.

Born in London to Moroccan/Indian parents, Laila travelled to India after completing her studies, and for six years worked as a house VJ for popular music station Channel V. While living in Bombay, Laila also worked for MTV, BBC World and TNT, and her efforts in improving Indo-Moroccan relations led to her being awarded a knighthood by King Mohammed VI of Morocco. More recently, she has appeared in Primeval, while she danced into the quarter-finals of Strictly Come Dancing in 2009. Laila can currently be seen in Channel 4’s TV Book Club, in which she discusses the latest great reads.
